Overton 5 mile was yesterday. I did what I didn't think I could do, I broke 40, 39:58 to be precise thanks to a full fledged sprint at the end. Thankfully the course was shaded for almost all of it, considering .75 was on trail, not surprising.
The trail was a lot longer this year, twice as much as last year, also instead of being a double loop, the trail started at the 3 mile mark, went around, and dumped you back out near the original i mile marker and you ran back to the start, so the start and finish were in the same spot. Here is a good photo of me approaching the trail start, which was also by the start finish line.
Ran this morning, it was oppresive hot due to my being an idiot and running at 1030 when I should have gotten out there before 9. Went two miles as a just to loosen the legs up, went and did weights this afternoon for the first time in a month, upper body only, tomorrow going to do some leg and core stuff. That's it for now, no races on the docket until two weeks from now with the 1st MRRS 5 miler in Bartlett.
Quick tip: The hidden reason guys wear either no shirt of a really loose one is to prevent nipple chafing. I hurt right now.

Well, looks like a first will occur
Looks like rain tomorrow. If so, no pics from me, but I will post links.
Week of training has been abbreviated due to extreme heat, Pam being sick (have to watch the jackalope), and general apathy. Overton 5 Mile classic is tomorrow, due to the thunderstorms we are going to have today and through tomorrow, i expect my time to be slow. I don't expect to break 40 minutes due to part of the race being off road on grass and trail, and oh yeah, not training hard due to heat.
I will start next week with either night runs and/or getting my fat ass up early and running in the morning. I have 3 shots at breaking 40 in the 5 over the next 4 weeks. The best shot is the 2nd 5 miler in Bartlett, but I am going to try and get it out of the way.
Here is your friendly tip for races. Get to the race at least an hour early. This way you can get a decent parking spot (cannot be overrated), get an idea where the start line is, hit the port-a-john, get your stretching in, and relax because you won't be in a hurry.

Wow! Its been right at 4 months since my last post
Lets see, what have I done in the last 4 months.
Set a PR in the 5k, 22:29 at the Design A Wish 5k over at the Pink. Harder course than most, several hills at the start, 23rd overall out of 400 plus, 3rd in my age range, this is where I tend to fall. Usually I finish in the top 10% locally on anything sub 10k. Next year when I turn 35, the age bracket gets competitive, my current PR and average are a lot lower. Guess I'll have to improve.
Had a horrible Zoom through the Zoo, still did 31:37 so I guess I can call that a PR, I was hoping for better, but was tired and hot and had not really trained hard. Which ties into what happened the following week at the Navy Nautical 10 aka 11.5 miler. I was in no shape for this run, having not gone longer than 7 miles in the months leading up to it, plus it was 85 degrees at start. Add in that you run about 10-15 minutes slower when in extreme heat, that justifies the 1:52.52 I did. Next year, they are going to try to move it to May, I also am going to have to continue to train, I really fell off after the G-Town half. That won't happen again.
For the RRS, I am currently 2:15 ahead of last year, and I dialed it down a little today. In two weeks in Bartlett, I hope to break 40, do that for 2 straight races, then I will have shaved off almost 5 more minutes off last year, I am on pace to shave close to 30 mins off my time this year over year. Yeah?
37th Overton Mile Classic is this upcoming weekend, died hard on it last year, this year I ain't going out like that. Breaking 40 is my goal, I should be able to do it. Better shape and better food should help, I ate horrible the night before and ran out of energy quick.
Side news, my good friend Pat is going to be doing the Disney Half in January next year. Congrats to him, he's lost close to a 100 pounds in his weight loss plan. In 2013, I will run the tag team marathon with him. Something to look forward to.
Digression two, Pam is doing the Women's Run/Walk training, her finish is the day after the Cooper-Young 4 miler in September(I have an interview on this race coming up as I was the first person to register, link coming when it posts). Good luck babe.
I am going back to my 2-3 times weekly posts on running, I will do this through the St Jude. Pics, links, and others as they come.

Yeah, It's been a while
Quick and dirty post
Ran the Germantown Half-Set a new record, 1:51:59. Woo-Hoo!!! Shaved almost 7 minutes off my previous best. Even funnier, I could have gotten closer to 1:50 with a couple changes. Next time, I swear.
Going to be cutting back on the reaaaaaally long stuff, going to keep the 10-15 mile long runs on Sunday, but I am going to be switching up my weight workouts to include some more leg and core workouts. That was where I had problems on Sunday, if I can get my legs stronger and my core better for the breath control, I feel like I can potentially drop my half under 1:50 and my other times down. I'll let you know.

Monday feels good
Quick Weekend recap
WOO FUCKING HOO!!!! Bested 50, hell 48 flat, and I left a few seconds out there, tip to start to finish who ran this event, turn the FUCKING CLOCK AROUND SO THAT IT CAN BE SEEN AS YOU FINISH. My indicated time was 48:24, due to my start placement, finished in 48, if I had thought I could have beated 48:20, i would have continued my sprint. Meh, now I have to aim at sub 48 next time I run a 10k which admittedly will be a while. Side note, music was excellante mixo this time, California Lovin by Pac and Dre started me off, Saturday in the Park by Chicago when we through Handy, and last two songs were Don't Stop (live from the Dance) and You only get what you Give. Due to shuffle, no way it was planned so the Kudo of the Week to my Evo's music player software
The course was easy, the 5 and 10 were the same until the 2.5 marker when the 5kers turned off and we kept running through downtown. It was a strange course, ran past the Blue Monkey, ran through that housing development on the bluffs, and did a big out loop then back in to finsh on Beale. Another suggestion for races that end in a non even numbered distance, put up a 1 mile to go sign to help us out.
Next day, ran from the house to the Zoo, its a shade under 5 miles from the house there on Poplar. Legs took forever to unkink and the wind was kicking up, but I felt good. The pace I ran is what I want to try and do for the Nautical 10 miler in June and hopefully (not bloody likely) for a half at some point soonish.
No run today. Rest day then run for three of the next four with a long on Thursday. Then its off for most of next week due to VACATION!!!!!!!! Post later this week coming.

4 days to Race
First race of the year coming up on Saturday, the Move It Memphis 5k/10k at 10am downtown. Aiming to hit 50 mins, I think I can, hope so, no real hills on the course, should be fun.
If I ran the 5k, I have a gooooood chance at age placing, 10k....not so much, but doing the 10k due to needing the distance run. Hoping to enjoy myself.
Weekend run on Sunday was good that I did it, not good cause I was dying and hated the entire run, but I did it. Had a good workout this morning getting the weights in, lay off tomorrow and then a semi hard day Thursday, rest Friday, run Saturday.
All for now, buh-bye.

Saturday by the park
Today was a contrast day, started slow, finished fast. Knee sore from Thursday so had to take it slow until it stretched out. The park mentioned is the one next to east high, I forget the name due to apathy. Tomorrow is feeling like the greenline, hope I can go looooooong. We'll know tomorrow.
